This additional capacity strengthens Galileo’s portfolio in one of Europe’s most rapidly evolving markets, where renewable generation growth has driven demand for flexible and reliable power.
Galileo is also making rapid progress in advancing its 500 MW BESS portfolio. The company has recently obtained environmental impact assessment (EIA) approvals, known in Spain as the Declaración de Impacto Ambiental (DIA), for a further 75 MW, bringing the total of projects with EIA approval to 215 MW.
Securing EIA approval represents a significant permitting milestone, confirming that a project meets required environmental and technical requirements and materially derisking it as it progresses towards construction-readiness.
Across Spain, Galileo has a diversified development pipeline of 1.4 GW, providing strong optionality and market access while reflecting a strategic focus on complementary technologies to enhance grid flexibility and support a stable energy supply. A further 1.4 GW of pipeline projects relates to capacity tenders anticipated over coming years, providing additional growth potential.
Spain is expected to see significant battery storage growth as it seeks to increase power system flexibility and support renewable generation integration. Spain’s National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan sets an overall energy storage target of 22.5 GW by 2030, including 9 GW of BESS.
Eduardo González Solá, Galileo’s Director of Business Development for Spain & Power Origination for Europe, said: “Adding another 135 MW brings our total portfolio of grid-secured projects in Spain to 825 MW, while we also continue to make strong permitting progress across our BESS portfolio, with 215 MW now EIA-approved. These achievements reflect the strength of both our projects and the local team, while reinforcing our momentum in the Spanish market. Our strategy is focused on meeting Spain’s growing need for flexibility in the short to medium-term, while positioning for long-term growth in renewable generation, particularly onshore wind.”
Ingmar Wilhelm, Co-Founder and CEO of Galileo, added: “Our diversified 1.4 GW development pipeline provides significant strategic optionality in Spain. We see particularly compelling opportunities in battery storage in the short term and onshore wind in the medium term. Succeeding in a competitive market requires strong analytical and technical capabilities, combined with the ability to act swiftly and decisively towards clearly defined objectives. I believe our team is showing great delivery performance and ongoing momentum in this capabilities-driven chapter of the energy transition in Spain.”
